My Tattoo Made the Red Carpet!

March 4, 2016

Whoopi's tattoo caused a commotion on the red carpet at the Oscars. I tattooed Whoopi a little over 10 years ago at her loft in Soho she lived in at the time. She sent her driver over to pick me up with my equipment and a massage table. She said she liked dragons, I was pretty surprised when she went for such a good sized dragon tattoo going over her shoulder onto her chest. I never really got a good picture of it. It's hard to get a good picture of a fresh tattoo, there's always a glare when the tattoo is still shiny and irritated and this was before camera phones made taking pictures so easy.  Back then it was common to shoot a whole roll of film and be lucky to get one decent tattoo shot.

The funny thing is that I still remember when I got my first visible tattoos done on my arms. I got a black panther on my forearm from Mike Perfetto in Brooklyn. This was about 1993 and you didn't see many women with big tattoos back then. Girls didn't get tattoos, let alone get tattoos on their arms. I remember waking up with that panther and all I thought was, "Wow, I'll never be one of those girls who can wear a fancy dress." Not that I was ever a fancy dress kind of girl but I knew I had crossed a line and could never go back. Of course about a week later I got something done on my other arm to compliment the panther. I never would have thought that over 20 years later one of my tattoos would make it to the red carpet, fancy dress and all.

What People Hate About  Friday the 13th

These are actual complaints. They are valid complaints. It's a hectic day, there is a long wait and we cannot tattoo all the people who want to be tattooed. Be warned by these complaints. A FRIDAY THE 13th TATTOO MIGHT NOT BE FOR YOU.

ONE STAR REVIEW ON YELP:

"Friday the 13th - the Black Friday for tattoo shops. $13 tattoo + $7 tip. $20 Cash at Daredevil for a small, cute pineapple tattoo. Score!
That is until you meet the LAZY,  UNHELPFUL STAFF after you wait 2.5 hours in line. You're out of the stencil transfers? Unwilling to make more? No empathy? Nothing.
Where's the announcement in your self described "tattoo museum"? Not even a heads up. Instead I get a "what else do you want?" when I sit down?
I get it - the tattoo artists are banging out tattoos. 75-100 in a day? That's some serious cash. So you have that in your pocket and obviously don't care if you make a few measly bucks more.
Unapologetic. Waste of time. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE ON FRIDAY THE 13TH and definitely go somewhere else any other day. I know I will."

Answer: Yes LAZY!  We tattooed 250 people in one day. That was 10 hours of tattooing no breaks. Our shop Daredevil makes zero dollars on Friday the 13th. In fact it usually cost us $1000 at the end of the day to tattoo that many people. Yes you're right it's kind of a waste of time and you should definitely GO SOMEWHERE ELSE Because at the end of the day we might be a little punchy, we might have less patience and we might just want to go home. Luckily most of our customers are really cool and appreciative of the amount of effort it takes to tattoo that many people in one day.

We started doing Friday the 13th tattoos in 2003. No matter what else is going on with the shop, no matter how many Friday the 13ths there end up being in any given year (one year there were three in a row!! ) we have done literally thousands of these little tattoos for anyone who has the patience and temperament needed to get tattooed on the worst possible day to get tattooed at our shop. It's not for everyone, and it's definitely not for this guy who should GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. LITERALLY ANYWHERE ELSE. We'll just have to tattoo the other 250 people who are waiting.

p.s. Our self described tattoo museum actually contains artifacts spanning the last 100 years of the history of tattooing. We have original artwork by Samuel O'Reilly who patented the first electric tattoo machine in 1891. We also own one of the Thomas Edison engraving pens  that the first electric tattoo machine patent was based on. We also have the original "Sundancer" by Bert Grimm hanging as part of our permanent collection at the shop arguably one of the most famous traditional American tattoo images in existence. This collection is on display for the public during our regular business hours for no admission. Our museum is a registered  501c3 non profit organization.

Question: "Will there be a number system or will customers be given a number, told to come back at a certain time only to be told the number system has been abandoned and to wait all over again? Just making sure."

Answer: It's usually a total sh*t show trying to tattoo 200 people in one day. There's no good way to estimate when we will get to a certain number and often we call people and they do not answer so are not there when their number is up. We still get them in but it is a challenging day for all of us. The only way to get people through in perfect order would be to make people stand in line all day but that is not fun for anyone to have to stay in one place for hours and it annoys our neighbors. Our system allows everyone to wander off, get snacks, and patronize our fellow business owners in the neighborhood. It's not perfect and it's pretty much the worst possible day to get tattooed. The best way to get tattooed is to come in any other day, pay full price, get tattooed in a timely manner with all the attention you deserve as a customer.
